Drama as motor park touts attack soldier at Giri junction

- By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

A mild drama played out yesterday morning amid rainfall when some motor park touts attacked an unidentified soldier in mufti at Giri junction, Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.

A witness said the incident happened at about 10:24 am when the soldier stopped a Volkswagen Sharon bus with registration number AR 16 MUS, carrying passengers from Gwagwalada.

He said the soldier, after flagging down the bus at Giri Motor Park, told the driver he was going to Area 1, Abuja, adding that some touts at the park immediately descended on the soldier beating him.

“Honestly, this is strange because I was also in the bus which loaded passengers from Gwagwalada. On getting to Giri, the soldier stopped the driver and said he was going to Area 1, and as he tried to enter some touts and drivers started beating him,’’he said.

Our reporter, who arrived the scene while the drama was still on, observed as three soldiers in uniform came on motorcycles from their checkpoint and immediately removed their belts and ran after some people, suspected to be touts at the park suspected, while one of them said to have been attacked pulled out a jackknife.

City News saw the soldier, who was allegedly manhandled trying to puncture the tyres of some vehicles at the park but he was prevented by one of his colleagues.

The soldier then got onto the driver’s seat and drove the bus with three other soldiers and passengers in it to their checkpoint, a few meters away from University of Abuja permanent site, while two young men were seen sitting on the ground in the rain.

When contacted, Gwagwalada Divisional Police Officer, Mr Patrick Daaor, said he was not aware of the incident.
