Abuja car-snatching syndicate nabbed in Zaria

- From Isa Sa’idu, Zaria

A syndicate that specialises in snatching cars in Abuja and neighbouring cities was yesterday paraded by the Security Division of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Parading four suspects, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the university said the arrest followed an intelligence report. He said a 200 level student of the university from the Sociology Department was seen driving a Honda Pilot Jeep around the main campus and that the intelligence officers of the ABU Security Division, who were not comfortable with the development opened an investigation.

“Our men mobilised and we arrested the car. Our suspicion was confirmed after interrogating the driver of the car, who happened to be our student. He told the interrogating team that he was given the car to sell. At first, they took the car to Katsina, but they were not able to sell it. That is why Abdulazeez Abdulwaheed, a 200 level student of Sociology, was given the car to sell and he was driving it around the campus looking for buyer. The other person that was involved is one Abdul A. Abdullahi, who is a 500 level student of Biochemistry Department. His involvement is not deep because he was one of those who were contributing money to buy the car,” the ABU CSO said.

On how the car was snatched, the CSO said one Arinze Chidindu, a 500 level student of the National Open University, attacked the owner with an axe at Jahi area of Abuja.

“Chidundu was with one Chukwueduka Mduegbuna and two others when the crime was committed. The other two are still at large while Chidundu and Mduegbuna were arrested after we asked their agent, Abdulwaheed, to tell them that the car has been sold and they should come for the money. Chidundu and Mduegbuna with two of our students would be handed over to the police for further interrogation. The Honda Pilot Jeep car is still in our custody waiting for the owner to present himself for identification,” the ABU CSO said.
