Rights commission probe killings in Kaduna villages
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday described incessant killings in Southern part of Kaduna state as wearisome and promised to launch an investigation.
Gunmen in black attires reportedly stormed Zangang village under Attakar Chiefdom in Kaura Local Government last Saturday killing 13 people and setting many houses ablaze.
Speaking yesterday, the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Professor Chidi Odinkalu said the commission has commenced investigation into the killings.
Odinkalu said: “I was in Kaduna in the last fortnight. We’re making efforts to verify the narrative so as to identify how best we can be relevant. The situation in Southern Kaduna is very worrying.”
The NHRC chairman said while the commission is working with what it has at hand at the moment, visiting the communities on a verification mission would soon be carried out.
President of the Attakar Community Development Association Ishaya Kunden Samaila told our correspondent that the number of deaths recorded on Saturday has risen to 15 people who have been buried.
“Over 100 people have been killed since these attacks commence in our villages. Apart from secrete killings; five successive attacks have been launched on Attakar chiefdom alone without anyone helping. The attackers often come from the border area through Plateau state and after they kill, they always go back the same route,” Samaila said.
