10 FCT health workers honoured for outstanding performance

- By Ojoma Akor

Ten health workers have been honoured for their outstanding performance in the provision of health care services in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The health workers, who were drawn from Bwari and Gwagwalada area councils of the FCT, bagged the Dr Aminu Magashi ‘Heroic Annual Health Award.’

It was organised by the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) and the Heroic Discovery and Community Development Centre (HEDCODEC) as part of activities to mark this year’s United Nations Public Service Day.

Some of the awardees include a mental health nurse at the Gwagwalada Township Clinic, Onah Michael; Mrs Hadiza Usman, who won the Friendliest Staff at the Old Kutunku Primary Health Centre (PHC) Gwagwalada and Mrs Hannatu Uthman of the Sabon Gari PHC, Bwari.

Speaking during the ceremony yesterday in Abuja, the head of Human Resources Department, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Adeyemi Adeniran, said health care workers dedicated their lives to caring for others and often worked long hours while exposing themselves to health hazards.

He lauded their efforts in the provision of health care, adding that they risked their own health to maintain that of others.

The coordinator of AHBN and founder of the award, Dr Aminu Magashi Garba, said the award was instituted to recognise and encourage frontline health workers in their services to humanity.

He said that during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of health workers made sacrifices and were at the risk of the virus due to lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

While calling for more support for health workers, he said the award would be extended to more area councils.
