To theme or not to theme is the question with children’s rooms. Whatever the answer, it’s a place to make fun decorating choices.
Children’s rooms can be a mirror of current fashion, simply because they are updated more regularly as kids grow and tastes change.
Lisa Rose of Paterson Rose says kids’ room trends are moving away from monochrome and geometric designs. Now, they’re opting for bold colours and prints for boys in charcoal, khaki and navy.
‘‘Candy pink remains No 1 for small girls, while older girls are opting for softer tones of blush, silver and mint.’’
She says there is a desire to be able to change out decor easily and cost-effectively.
‘‘Room design is more minimal, with parents opting for decor that is less ‘busy’ and more timeless. There is a move away from heavy themes.
‘‘Where an adult leaves their room in the morning to return at night, a child uses their room throughout the day, making decorating a child’s bedroom more than just the bed and paint colour,’’ Rose says.
‘‘A child’s room should reflect their age, personality and obsessions of the day. Key for any child is that their bedroom is the one room in the house that is theirs. Include them in some of the decision making.
‘‘Perhaps you narrow down two duvet options that you are happy to buy, but let your child make the final decision.
‘‘Ask them what the base colour palette for the room could be,’’ she says.
‘‘Invest in a good-quality bed and long-lasting bedding but keep themed accessories simple and inexpensive so that updating the room with their latest craze doesn’t break the bank.’’
