Care village design plans under way
The design team for the $31.5 million Hawthorndale Care Village project in Invercargill is up and running.
Next steps include consultation with neighbours of the former Hawthorndale school site in Tay St and detailed design work ahead of a May resource consent application
The not-for-profit project announced last October is for a facility based on the innovative Dutch De Hogeweyk model, but with the difference that the care it offers, contained within a villagereplicating setting, will not be solely for people with dementia.
The design team includes construction project manager Nick Hamlin of Maxis Projects, architect Rob Campbell from the Christchurch-based Foley Group, engineering consultants Geosolve, WSP, Cosgroves and Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers.
Hamlin, who has delivered more than $150m in aged care facilities across the South Island, said he jumped at the opportunity to lead this project.
‘‘Having seen family members live with dementia meant this project is personal as well, and I can see the ultimate value in this world leading model,’’ he said.
Campbell, who will head to De Hogeweyk later this month, said the
Southland-Otago project was ‘‘destined to be a world class and a leading care village in Invercargill that will replicate everyday life within a safe, secure and stimulating environment’’.
The fundraising campaign to date has brought in donations and grants, leaving the $31.5m project a current shortfall of $11m to see it through to completion.
