lineup is very pleasing, then to get the series win, that tops it off.’’

Jamieson’s first task on debut was to help the Black Caps recover and post a competitive total, after they slumped to 197-8 in the 42nd over. He made 25 off 24 balls, a knock that included a pair of towering sixes, while Ross Taylor added 44 off 27 as they put together an unbroken partnership of 76 for the ninth wicket.

(Ravindra Jadeja 55, Shreyas Iyer 52; Tim Southee 2-41, Kyle Jamieson 2-42) by 22 runs.

New Zealand lead 3-match series 2-0.

That lifted the Black Caps to 273-8 from their 50 overs and they then managed to dismiss India for 251, with Jamieson grabbing a wicket at either end of the innings.

He bowled Prithvi Shaw at the end of his opening over, then at the death he bowled Navdeep Saini.

After impressing on debut, Jamieson should get another chance at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui tomorrow, when the Black Caps will be eyeing a clean sweep, having beaten India in an ODI series for the first time since 2014.

‘‘When I was growing up I was a batter, so I probably dreamed of scoring a hundred on debut, and it wasn’t quite that today,’’ he said.

‘‘As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started thinking more like: How can I contribute to the team? How can we win a game? How can we win a series.

‘‘In the present moment, doing that is the most special thing.’’

Jamieson said he had been ready to come in and perform after being around the test squad earlier in the summer.

‘‘I learnt a heck of a lot in those three weeks, and just being around the group and getting a taste of it was pretty cool.

‘‘That gave me the feeling of ‘right, this is where I want to be,’ then coming into the ODI group and playing today, I was a lot more comfortable, having been around the guys.

‘‘It certainly made it a wee bit easier.’’
