Man owed $8000 in unpaid fines

-

Police in Queenstown arrested a man for driving while forbidden and non-payment of $8000 in fines at the weekend.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said officers were called to a domestic incident at 10.40am on Saturday.

While at the house, they spoke to a 26-year-old man and discovered he owed more than $8000 in unpaid fines.

The man was also forbidden to drive because his licence had expired.

However, at 1.25pm the man decided to drive – he was arrested, charged with driving while forbidden, and the vehicle impounded.

Two Queenstown men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour after a drunken incident outside a pub.

The men were refused entry to a Steamer Wharf bar about 3am but returned and verbally abused door staff.

Police also want to speak to any witnesses to suspicious behaviour in the Mt Crichton Loop track car park on the QueenstownGlenorchy road.

Mr Watt said trampers returned to the car park on Friday at 7pm and discovered a car window smashed and electronic equipment, including an ipod, stolen.

He urged people not to leave any valuables in vehicles.

Meanwhile, Alexandra police were kept busy during the weekend.

Yesterday an Omakau woman returned to her home to find an intruder. He ran off but police found him a short time later.

The 59-year-old man was arrested and charged with burglary. He was kept in custody and will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Police were also called to assist doctors and ambulance staff at Alexandra Medical Centre yesterday.

The medical team was trying to help a male who had a severe asthma attack but a 20-year-old Alexandra man was interfering with the treatment.

Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said his behaviour was so out of order that police arrested him.

He was charged with disorderly behaviour, resisting police and wilful damage. He will appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.

Police arrested a 24-year-old Alexandra man on Saturday night in connection with a theft at a Central Otago hotel last week. He has been charged with theft and will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
