Wigram town square enters stage two
Construction is under way on two new buildings in the second stage of The Landing retail and mixeduse centre in Christchurch’s Wigram Skies subdivision.
The latest stage of the project includes the addition of The Good Home Bar to the existing town square dining precinct.
It also includes a large retail and office space housing tenants such as Hell Pizza and childrenswear and costume store SmartyPants on the main thoroughfare, which is called The Runway.
When completed, the second stage will boast a total area of 3509 square metres, including 1800sqm of retail, 600sqm of office space and 451sqm of hospitality space spread across three buildings.
Buchan Group was appointed by developer Ngai Tahu Property in June 2010 to design key components of The Landing’s retail and office buildings.
The precinct will be home to retail, dining, commercial and community facilities in a highstreet-style environment.
Built around a town square, The Landing will cost about $20 million and will act as a social and economic drawcard for Wigram Skies’ master-planned community, located southwest of Christchurch.
Stage one of The Landing, which was completed in mid-2015, has a 8975sqm site area. This includes 2000sqm of retail and office space spread across three buildings and a 2600sqm New World supermarket.
The Buchan Group in conjunction with Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects designed the public town square and The Runway, which is a main street featuring a continuous folded roof.
Buchan associate Gavin Gillson said The Landing design would encourage visitors to take time out, relax and appreciate their surroundings.
‘‘The centrepiece of The Landing is the town square, and restaurants and cafes that spill out into the common area, creating a piazza-like environment,’’ he said.
The Runway’s varying roof height adds depth and elevation to the area and protects people from the elements.
Parking is situated in the northern and southern precincts.
The addition of a medical centre offers a one-stop-shop destination for locals, Gillson said.
The project is due for completion by 2018 when it is expected nearly 1800 homes and 4000 residents will be there.
