The 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. It’s going to be huge. The combination of football, an exotic location and some pretty serious partying makes this an all round good time to be had in July this year. It’ll cost you an arm and a leg to get there but the experience will be worth it. The 20th Commonwealth Games are being held in the fine city of Glasgow this July and August. The Scots sure do know how to put on a shindig, so after the day’s events you can party into the long, light nights. Russia is hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics next month. Ninety-eight events in 15 winter sports will be held during the 22nd Winter Games from February 6-23 in the coastal city of Sochi. It might not be the safest country to head to for such an event but live dangerously. The world will be in union once again at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, this time in England and Wales. The World Cup, from September 18 to October 31, is the eighth in the cup’s history. The battle between the All Blacks and those English roses is surely worth the airfare across the globe. If there’s one city that knows how to have a knees-up it’s Rio de Janeiro. The city will be hosting the Summer Olympics in August 2016. Expect a little bit of chaos and a truckload of fun. Wimbledon. It’s the only annual event in our ‘‘best of’’ lineup but you have to love an event that is low-key on the crowd front, where Pimm’s and strawberries and cream are stock standard fare, and where there’s the chance to see some of the greats of tennis, both the young guns and the veterans. Tickets are sold at the gate every day.
