RSA officials perturbed by lack of support for bowls event
A local bowling club has lambasted a neighbouring faction for failing to support one of its major events of the season.
The incident came when the the annual Scog Bunting Memorial Triples was held at the Far North RSA on Wednesday, November 7.
The event attracted teams of any combination from Cooper’s Beach, Houhora and the host club only, which led organisers to afterwards express their disappointment at the lack of support from one neighbouring club for what they described as the RSA’s major tournament for the season.
“Clubs need to be aware that we must support each other as this [event] is the main source of income without which it would be a struggle to survive,” it was noted before the focus was returned to the day’s sporting proceedings.
Highlights included Jill Phillips and Allan Thom donating a ham for lunch which, along with the sides and steam pudding with icecream and fruit salad for afternoon tea, was enjoyed by all.
On the green, no teams claimed four wins in the Laser Electrical tournament (now in its 16th year and partly sponsored by Kim Bunting) so of the six teams who all finished with three wins, five went on to end up in the prize money.
Results were, Dave and Pam Roughton, Len Cooke (Cooper’s Beach) 3 wins, 21 ends 52 points, 1; Peter Dorreen, Russell Hockley, Liz Muru (RSA) 3, 21, 48, 2; Ian Macnee, Doug and Yvonne Anderson (RSA) 3, 21, 40, 3; Stef Hildreth, Jean Huxtable, Moss Hotere (RSA) 3, 20, 51, 4; Margaret Wildbore, Trevor Smith, Trevor Wilcox (Cooper’s Beach) 3, 18, 35, 5.
With play finished for the day, thanks went to the main sponsors for their generous support, while the greenkeeper, tournament conveners, kitchen, raffle seller and timekeeper were also acknowledged for their efforts.
