Juniors make mark with close contest for position in regional final

The focus was on junior bowlers last weekend when the 1-5 year Interclub sixes were completed to find a winner to represent Northland in the regional final in May.

There was top competitio­n, with the event held on a round robin system. Going into the last round, two clubs were even on points. After losing all matches in round one and winning only one in the last, the winning combinatio­n was Kensington on a countback of shots scored, from the Onerahi team. Congratula­tions to all players for the outstandin­g bowls played and the manner in which they were played. Results were:

1st: Kensington Parahaki Devils, 30 win points, +71 shots differenti­al; 2nd: Onerahi, 30 win points, + 38 shots; 3rd: Kamo 24 win points, -15 shots; 4th: Whanga¯ rei 21 win points, -9; Mangawhai Yellow: 15 win points; Mangawhai Red 15 win points.

The Bowls3Five interclub continued last evening and have one round to complete on February 13. Please check the centre website for current placings in this event. The winner will play against the Far North winning combinatio­n in the quarterfin­als.

Under 5 year bowlers are reminded entries for the junior singles will close on February 7. The following weekend the Centre First Year singles tournament will also be played. Clubs, please ensure that your new bowlers are entered in this competitio­n. Entries close February 14.

The Taranaki Open for men has been played this week and will be followed by the Taranaki Women's Open. Also on the calendar is the NZ Ma¯ ori Bowls tournament which will be played on February 2-3. Several Northland teams are competing. Also in action starting on February 11 is the NZ Chartered Clubs men's tournament where several teams from our centre will be taking part.

Club tournament­s this next week are: Saturday — Leigh Men's triples; Sunday Arapohue Men's Triples; Tuesday Maungakara­mea AC Triples; One Tree Point AC Triples; Thursday Whanga¯ rei AC Triples 5.30pm.
