Tradies encouraged to down tools for wellness event
Sir John Kirwan will be in New Plymouth today talking to tradies about tools they can use for their mental health and wellbeing.
This will be the second Tradies Tools Down event, aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of mental health.
And all tradies are encouraged to put their tools down and attend the free event, Business Wellness Taranaki general manager and Tradies Tools Down committee member Christina Lorth said. “Our keynote speaker Sir John Kirwan will share valuable insights and tools to promote better wellbeing in our everyday lives.”
Tradies Tools Down was more than just an event to bring the industry together.
“It's an initiative designed to raise awareness about mental health and solutions within the construction sector. Our mission is to transform industry discussions, fostering an environment where stigma associated with mental health is reduced, and individuals are inspired to communicate openly.”
Poor mental health was a problem in the construction industry, which had a higher suicide rate than in any other industry, she said.
More than 600 leaders and workers from the sector have registered to attend. A wide range of construction industry businesses in Taranaki will be represented, including residential and commercial building, civil, infrastructure, engineering, trades professionals (plumbers, electricians, carpenters) and related sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, oil and gas.
The event provides not only an opportunity for tradies to connect and learn practical tools around mental health, but unwind and enjoy entertainment and food with like-minded people, Lorth said.
“More importantly, it’s about feeling connected, knowing you’re part of a community that's got your back and wants to see things change for the better.”
Support services including Building Wellness Taranaki, Yellow Brick Road and Tui Ora will be on-site to offer assistance and provide resources for attendees to take away.
Tradies Tools Down will run from 3pm to 5pm at TSB Stadium today and is a free event for all tradies and their partners. Donations to Tradies Tools Down will be accepted.
