Tremain wins title

- By CAITLIN WALLACE

Brad Tremain has made his dad proud after winning a karting trophy which was well-sought after in his family for 30 years.

The 21- year old from Tokoroa won the national grand prix at the Kartsport Road Racing Nationals.

‘‘That’s pretty cool, dad and grandad had been trying to win that for 30 years.’’

He said the likes of Ian Vice won the trophy before him, a ‘‘big name’’ in the karting world.

‘‘It was his [dad’s] biggest rivalry.’’

At the annual event where more than 40 attended, he also came second in the 125cc class and fourth overall.

It all started at the age of about 5 when he was placed into a kart by his father.

‘‘I spun out on the first lap.’’ Not the best start, but that didn’t deter any ambitions he had although he never really started competitive racing until two years ago.

He found it to be a completely different world to running laps at Tokoroa Kart Club meets.

‘‘It’s a lot higher calibre . . . everyone is just more professional.’’

In his races he would just follow others around and learn off them.

Tremain’s next goal is the National Sprint title next month in Palmerston North – another win he hoped to claim under the family name.

‘‘No-one in my family has won it,’’ he said.

The sprint races are shorter and tighter compared to road racing.
