WHATEVER the outcome of the proposed upper harbour developmen­t, if it is part of a sea mammal sanctuary and the encouragem­ent and study of Southern right whales around our coast, I’m all for it. Otago Harbour was once a sheltered whale nursery for them.

NEW Waiho bridge costing $6.6 million (ODT, 2.5.19). And our council wants us to fork out three times that figure for a bridge three times shorter and three times narrower — and possibly 30 times less use, necessity and purpose. A bit like this council, you might say.

AN outstandin­g new bus stop is created as part of the Portobello road upgrade. Meticulous blockwork, shelter from the storm, organic seating, all in a classic, and somewhat brutalist, design. So much finer than those glass and steel excuses. Thanks to the DCC for the decision and Mr Bailey for the blockwork.
