Kaharau looks for third time lucky in cup

-

WELLINGTON: Trainer Ken Rae is hopeful Kaharau can bounce back from his flat Boxing Day performance at Wingatui on the first day of the West Coast summer thoroughbred circuit tomorrow.

It could be a case of third time lucky for Kaharau, who has run second to The Gordonian in the past two runnings of the Greymouth Cup.

The 7yrold gelding was a winner at Cromwell in early December before a disappointing run at Wingatui, carrying the top weight of 60kg.

‘‘Nothing went to plan at Dunedin last start; everything turned to s...,’’ Rae said.

‘‘He’s come through the run all right and I’ve been jumping him a bit too. He will probably be a hurdler sooner or later.

‘‘His flat career is getting a bit hard because of the weight he’s carrying, but he won the Nathan’s Memorial carrying 60kg and none of those horses at Greymouth on Sunday could do that. I think he’s on track and even if he’s not, we’ve had a good run with him.’’

The Gordonian will follow the same pattern into tomorrow’s race that led to him winning last year’s Greymouth Cup.

Topweight Overtheriver clearly brings the best form into the 2000m handicap.

The Kevin Myerstrained gal loper charged home with a huge finish to run third to Rock On in his last start in the Manawatu Cup.

Myers also has Duffers Creek and Chic in the race.

Flying Sardine, who starts in the Greymouth Cup, is one of a large team Riverton trainer Kelvin Tyler has engaged tomorrow.

The galloper will step back up to 2000m for the first time since April. — NZ Racing Desk
