Appreciating efforts of the hospital staff

-

THE other day in mid afternoon, I was in the hospital foyer sitting having a coffee at that great little coffee bar. I couldn’t help but notice a young doctor waiting and he was soon joined by another.

The second one sat down obviously very tired and his body language was one of some despondency. He was rubbing tired eyes while the other was, I think giving encouragement. I did not hear any conversation but the first bought a coffee for the second who continued to sit and rub his eyes and hands.

He was obviously very, very tired and, I think, to some extent stressed.

While I do not have the authority, I think it goes without saying to these two, and all our hospital doctors and nurses and all the others who do the day to day work looking after us, that despite the shemozzle being foisted on you by overpaid outsiders, we do appreciate your efforts.

We hope that one day soon we get control of our hospital and the teaching medical school back and maybe set things right.

I WAS disappointed in the message from the Mayor’s Desk in the latest FYI Dunedin — Your DCC News. Promises for progress on cycleways, the bus hub, the Mosgiel pool site, the relationship with China, but not a word about a community centre with a library for South Dunedin.

I hope this isn’t a signal that this project has been forgotten.

Joan Ledgerwood, President, Friends of the Library [Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull replies: ‘‘The hub will be an exciting development for South Dunedin and will address a range of needs in the community in a positive way. Staff are currently identifying an appropriate site to establish a popup temporary facility where different services and facilities can be tested. This will help us to determine what components should be included in the final hub.’’] ..................................
