Adams’ rival stripped of another Oly medal

- ATHLETICS

Disgraced Belarusian shot putter Nadia Ostapchuk has been stripped of another Olympics medal after retrospective drug testing.

She has now lost the bronze medal she won at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, an event won by New Zealand’s Dame Valerie Adams.

Ostapchuk famously had her London Olympics gold medal stripped after doping tests at the 2012 Games. That move saw Adams elevated from second to first, giving the Kiwi back-to-back golds.

The International Committee announced the latest Ostapchuk decision on Friday as they continue to put the anti-doping microscope over past Games.

‘‘Re-analysis of Ostapchuk’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substances dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) and tamoxifen,’’ the IOC said as it announced sanctions for eight athletes from the 2008 and 20012 Games. They confirmed she was now disqualified. Ostapchuk was also stripped of her 2005 world title following a positive test in 2013.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been requested to modify the Olympic results and to consider any further action within its own competence. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus has been ordered to return Ostapchuk’s medal, medallist pin and diploma to the IOC ‘‘as soon as possible’’.

After the London decision Adams said she would never forgive Ostapchuk. Adams was hugely disappointed at having her gold medal moment taken away from her at the London Olympics venue. Adams had her gold medal presentation in New Zealand at a subsequent ceremony.
