Needing help for dance dream

- BY BRENDA VOWDEN brenda.vowden@nzme.co.nz

Dancing since the age of six has paid off for 18-year-old Ocean Adamson, who recently gained a place in world-renowned hip hop dance crew The Royal Family, a chance to dance all over the world. But paying for the privilege is a harder step to take.

“I would really appreciate some help,” Ocean says.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help fund Ocean’s dream, to compete in Spain, France and the USA, as well as representing New Zealand at the World Expo in Dubai.

“After years and years of hard work, training, competing, choreographing, teaching and performing I have achieved my dream of becoming a member of the Royal Family dance company after a successful first audition. Some is funded but not all, so fundraising is needed in a short space of time. If you can help me to continue to follow my dreams I sincerely thank you,” Ocean says.

Before Ocean flies off in July, she has corporate events to attend, school performances, regionals, nationals, intensives and shows in Hamilton, Auckland, New Plymouth, Palmerston North and Wellington. Ocean needs to come up with $7000 which will cover the cost of dance competitions, flights and accommodation. With her itinerary confirmed, Ocean is off to Spain and Paris, before competing in the USA — she won’t be paid while overseas.

Her mum Teresa says Ocean is training six days a week, with the hours to increase a lot before each event. She says Ocean is thinking outside the square, but Teresa wants to take that worry off her daughter.

“I’m trying to get Ocean not to stress about the money and just train and look after herself. She is trying to sell most of her clothes. Sponsorship would be awesome, but I’m not sure how that works. I’m hoping people can donate — every bit helps and is very much appreciated.”

Teresa says Ocean is anxious, but determined.

“This is an amazing opportunity and I’m very, very proud of my girl who’s worked so hard for this over a lot of years.”

Teresa is organising a quiz night with the help of Harcourts and selling raffle tickets. She says it’s a lot of work as she’s the only mum in the group from Napier.

“There’s no team for events up there but it’s what I have to do so I’m just doing it. This opportunity means the world to Ocean — it’s been a dream of hers to not only be in the Royal Family but compete overseas in the big time events.”
