Getting in the swing of art deco
The Napier Technical Memorial Band is getting into the Art Deco swing with their next concert this Sunday, February 23 at 2pm, inspired by the music of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller.
Round off the Art Deco week in style and get your foot tapping to the bright dixieland swing of Woodwind Marmalade, hum along to the sound of the saxophone in Harlem Nocturne and be transported back in time to the days before TV, when the big band sound ruled the airwaves.
“We look forward to welcoming back our regular concert goers as well as meeting new audience members at St Paul’s Church at 2pm. Tickets are $10,” says Junior Tech Band conductor Teresa Cuthbert.
To attract more members to the senior band and encourage young local musicians, The Napier Tech Band is continuing the Junior
Tech Band this year.
This is aimed at musicians who have been playing for between one to four years, who can read music and would like the chance to play with other like-minded young musicians.
“We are looking for woodwind and brass players, drummers, keyboard players, percussionists and bass players to join us,” Teresa says.
This term’s music includes The Flintstones, YMCA and Mambo No. 5. Teresa is a registered New Zealand teacher with 23 years experience and 13 years experience conducting the Napier Central School orchestra, which meets on Tuesday evenings 6pm-6.45pm in the Napier Tech Band Room, Whitmore Park, Napier.
“We are leading up to a Mother’s Day Concert on Sunday, May 10 with the Senior Tech Band.
“We may even fit in a busking session on Emerson Street at the beginning of April.”
This Junior Band replaces the holiday workshops previously run by the band.
“We hope to see the musicians’ skills progressing over time and leading eventually to them joining the Senior Band.”
