Takaro duo take centre pairs title

- George Heagney

Takaro bowlers Pat Horgan and Dean Gilshnan were on song as they cruised to another centre title.

Gilshnan and Horgan won the centre open pairs final 21-11 over composite team Brian Little and Ross Ellery at Northern on Sunday.

It is the second centre title the pair have won together this season after they won the Manawatu¯ open fours, with Matt Pearson and Graeme Cooley, in December.

Takaro bowlers have won the mixed pairs, fours and pairs this season. The only title to elude them was the singles, won by Stephen Love, of Johnston Park. The triples are still to come and Horgan, Gilshnan and Cooley should mount a strong challenge there.

Horgan has now won 24 centre titles and Gilshnan has 13.

The final was close until Horgan and Gilshnan pulled away on the last few ends.

The pair went through the tournament unbeaten and got past Wayne Stewart and Ted Hodgson 21-12 in the semifinal.

Robyn Schischka and Lyn Corbett, of Johnston Park, won the women’s pairs in December.

❚ Both the Manawatu¯ men’s and women’s rep bowlers will be playing Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Ka¯ piti Coast and Taranaki at the hexagonal tournament on the Northern and Palmerston North greens this weekend.

The men are playing at Palmerston North and the women at Northern, with play from 9am today.

The under-8s are playing in Whanganui.
