Santa cruises into carols concert

-

Two fake Santas came to a Palmerston North primary school and then one more call went out and another Santa arrived – on a Harley-davidson motorbike.

He was actually the fourth Santa on duty. One had to pull out just three hours before due to a problem with his motorbike.

College Street Normal School held its annual Christmas carols concert yesterday.

Although Santa always featured at the concert, it was usually a familiar face behind the beard, said teacher Clive Robertson.

‘‘We wanted to up it a bit this year . . . if it’s me they can usually tell by my shoes, or if it’s Mr V [teacher] they can tell because he’s huge . . . we thought we’d get someone completely different.’’

Robertson, who took on the role of Santa’s elf, wanted to treat the pupils and their families to a surprise. After the final carol of the day, he introduced the audience to two impostor Santas, who came in on a scooter and a bike.

When Robertson called for Santa one final time, he rolled into the school hall on a Harleydavidson. Santa stuck around to hand out gifts to kids who had been especially good this year, before leaving and giving the crowd a few revs of his bike.

The school’s Christmas spirit shone in the Stuff the Bus Christmas appeal too, collecting more than 1600 cans of food and toys.
