Tribunal could decide on water fluoridation
Kapiti could be set for a fluoride tribunal if opponents to the water additive have their way.
Speaking last Thursday, Fluoride Action Network spokeswoman Mary Byrne said Kapiti should run a tribunal rather than a public referendum on the decision to add fluoride to water to boost dental health.
‘‘For some reason when it comes to fluoridation, people are more likely to vote for the status quo,’’ she said.
Her submission to Kapiti Coast District Council came in the build-up to consultation set for early 2014 on whether to continue fluoridating the water supply.
The consultation will not be a binding referendum, but will likely be used to inform a council decision on whether to keep using fluoride in water in Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati. Otaki and Paekakariki are not fluoridated.
In June, Hamilton dumped fluoridation in a vote following a tribunal decision by councillors.
However, in October, 70 per cent voted in a non-binding referendum for fluoride to be put back.
Ms Byrne said a tribunal would be made up of councillors, and hear presentations from primary pro and anti fluoride presenters. This would be followed by 10-minute submissions from community members.
She said in the Hamilton referendum anti-fluoride campaigners were up against the district health board, the Ministry of Health and ‘‘mainstream media’’.
