The story titled ‘Hastings council’s $3.1m plan to fill Lowe’s Lake and turn it into public park’ garnered the following comments on Facebook:

● Katelyn Jensen: Keep the lake nature treasures, make a scenic walk way an eat area to encourage workers for daily walks through breaks, fresh air, clear head and scenic pondering. Maybe some sculptures from local artists. Put the funds to useful ways to encourage Positive Wellbeing, physically mentally, emotionally an yes spiritually.

● This is why I’ve lost faith in democracy . . . ! I believe that a streamlined referendum on issues such as this

Michael Spence:

would stop pointless waste of money (our tax/rates money) by incompetent officials. Such streamlined mini referendums could be set up cheaply and efficiently — but those voted in to serve the public needs would never sanctify such a thing . . . I’ll still vote but not for any idiot that thought a park in an industrial area with more pressing issues was a good idea . . .

● Local park in an industrial area , yeah that’s a great idea , what a waste of money, when you gona fix the water problem ?

● They’re literally finishing off a reserve/park thing across the road from the pakowhai dog park near my workplace like

stop we have enough parks and reserves etc. Find something else to do with it.

● The only good thing to come out of filling it in is that the lazy industrial companies will no longer be able to dump their waste there.

● Waste of money how bout fixing the water problem.

● Making a type of park in the industrial area of Hastings? Cool bro but I’ll pass.

● We have multiple parks around the area, we have many more issues again that need to be addressed and sorted

. . . priorities need to be adjusted.

● Leave as it is or allow private companies to dump

their fill there. The council should be trying to save rate payers money.

● When I think “fun place to take young kids” the middle of an industrial park is always what comes to mind first.

● Absolute waste of money. How about looking at other things that are priority .

● only study should be the way to sell it for the most money for industrial development. It’s not a natural lake so there’s no redeeming features.

● Leave it be and save money.

● Theres a massive one just up the road fill build some houses on it
