SAFETY Real life demo of car accident held to raise awareness

- By B.DULGUUN

More than 200 children and young people participated in the second traffic safety workshop aimed to prevent accidents and raise awareness about traffic safety rules.

Taking place outside the Ministry of Roads and Transport Development, the workshop showed four demonstrations to teach children the proper way to travel in cars, the importance of wearing a seat belt, and key pointers to crossing the road safely.

The Traffic Police Department closed a section of the road outside School No.1 to show real life situation of car accidents with assistance from State Honored Athlete and yokozuna Asashoryu D.Dagvadorj and State Honored Actor E.Tsolmonbayar.

Statistic show that 27 children died in a traffic accident in the last eight months, while 95 children sustained mild or serious injuries. Although this is an improvement figure compared to the same period of last year, the Traffic Police Department says it’s possible to further reduce the number of deaths and injured. Police officers blamed parents for most accidents involving children, saying that they set bad examples by crossing the road without traffic light or pedestrian crossing and not teaching basic traffic safety rules to their children.

Senior Lieutenant at the Auto Traffic Police Division M.Uyanga commented, “The president of Mongolia recently organized a meeting on child protection with concerned agencies and organizations. The president ordered them to conduct a demonstration workshop. Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, General Police Agency and Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports organized this workshop to teach children and adults about the causes of traffic accidents, what kinds of injuries it can cause and other negative impacts, things not to do when crossing the street, and ways to prevent traffic accidents. This type of demonstration workshop is far more effective than classroom teaching methods.”

Head of Children’s Crime Prevention Division at the General Police Department D.Budzaan stated, “Statistically, around 600 people die due to traffic accident each year in Mongolia. The majority of them, or 50 to 60 percent, are infants and children. It’s likely that the number of fatalities of traffic accidents will rise in coming years. Demonstrating real life situations is the most effective way to show risk, dangers and consequences of traffic accidents and make parents realize that their bad examples can lead to their child getting into an accident.”

The organizers shared plans to hold more demonstration workshops and screen documentaries on traffic safety to students in schools across the capital.
