HSBC finances water conservation project at Tarxien school

-

Students of St Thomas More Middle School Tarxien now have the opportunity to change their outlook on water consumption thanks to a conservation project funded by the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop.

The school, which is reputed for taking a proactive approach in safeguarding the environment, needed to replace its crumbling rainwater preservation system. With the help of HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop, two water tanks and one water reservoir have been installed. The tanks have a capacity of 1,000 litres while the reservoir can hold up to 5,000 litres. The new system will be used for landscaping and gardening.

The project at this Green Flag school was officially inaugurated by the Minister for Educa- tion Evarist Bartolo in a morning assembly, during which students presented cards bearing their environmental artwork. The design of the cards feature water conservation messages in multiple languages. This innovative approach, blending science with international languages attracted more funding from the Catch the Drop programme. A total of 100 cards were printed to be given away in the community.

St Thomas More Middle School assistant head Franceanne Borg Orland commended the support of HSBC and said: “We came up with this rain harvesting project but were unable to continue it on our own due to lack of funding. HSBC’s support made it possible to realise the project in a professional and sustainable way.”
