Social Practice Art at the Curatorial School
Taking place between 3-7 September at Valletta Campus (University of Malta), the fifth edition of the Curatorial School will once again bring to Malta some of the world's prominent curators and artists.
Directed by Professor Raphael Vella and organised by Valletta 2018 Foundation, the general theme of the Curatorial School in 2018 is "Social Practices in Contemporary Art and Curating". Social Practice art is an artistic genre that has become very relevant in recent years and should be of interest to emerging curators as well as contemporary artists. It refers to artistic processes that are typically initiated by artists or curators but engage with different audiences, communities or non-artists. This collaborative approach in artmaking and curating incorporates methods and ideas from various fields, including education, politics, activism and ethnography.
Lectures and workshops in this year's Curatorial School will deal with the theoretical background of social practice art and discuss historical and recent examples of social engagement in the arts. The international speakers in this year's edition are Paul O'Neill, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Michael Birchall, Kelly Large, Alfredo Cramerotti and Nina Möntmann. Students will also be able to present their own ideas and projects during workshops.
Registration is open until 30 June and can be accessed through the Valletta 2018 website: https://valletta2018.org/registration/
