AC Milan safely through to Europa League last 16

-

AC Milan have coasted into the last 16 of the Europa League as a 1-0 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in yesterday's last-32 second leg gave them a 4-0 aggregate victory.

The Rossoneri boasted a 3-0 lead in the tie from the first leg and were under the cosh from the off at San Siro as the Bulgarians set about trying to whittle down the deficit.

However, the hosts could afford to sit back in the opening stages and soon went on the attack, Andre Silva firing a low shot at goal that goalkeeper Jorge Broun managed to halt in the 12th minute.

Gennaro Gattuso's charges grew into the game and took the lead on 21 minutes when Patrick Cutrone's low cross across the sixyard box was rifled home by Fabio Borini at the far post.

Wanderson took advantage of a rare Milan defensive error to have a shot on goal midway through the first half but Antonio Donnarumma was able to make a comfortable save.

At the other end, Ludogorets struggled to clear both a Franck Kessie cross and Silva's follow-up on the rebound as the hosts ended the first half on top.

The second period then began in similar fashion as to how the first half ended, with Milan on top and dominating possession.

However, Cutrone spurned a gilt-edged opportunity to double the Rossoneri's advantage on 53 minutes, firing wide from Borini's chip into the box despite being completely unmarked.

Ludogorets caused panic in the Milan back line just after the hour as Natanel fired into the side netting from close range.

Despite the odd foray forward by the visitors, it ultimately proved a comfortable night for the Italians, who cruised into the last 16 of the competition.

Arsenal advance despite defeat to Ostersunds FK

Arsenal secured themselves a spot in the last-16 of the Europa League despite falling to a 2-1 second-leg defeat against Swedish side Ostersunds FK at the Emirates yesterday evening.

Arsene Wenger's charges edged through 4-2 on aggregate thanks largely to a 3-0 victory in the first leg, as goals from Hosam Aiesh and Ken Sema punished an outof-sorts Gunners side in the return fixture in north London.

Graham Potter's Ostersunds will head out having recorded victories against two former Champions League constants this term, having also defeated Galatasaray 2-0 in Sweden during the qualification rounds.

Ostersunds started the contest with real purpose and industry, which came in stark contrast to the Gunners, who barely got going inside the first 20 minutes.

The Swedish side soon sprung into life in the 22nd minute, when Saman Ghoddos produced a delightful, cross-field ball for Aiesh, who then saw his shot across the face of goal deflected on its way into the net by Calum Chambers.

Potter's charges delivered a second shock blow just two minutes later, this time as Ghoddos pounced on more slack Arsenal defending to find Sema, leaving the winger to produce some memorable skill inside the box before lashing a shot beyond David Opsina and into the far corner.

Wenger looked on with clear frustration from the bench as his side continued to toil in the first half, leaving Ostersunds to gain more confidence having settled into a comfortable lead heading into the break.

The Gunners might have grabbed a goal to settle any nerves just before the half-time whistle, only for skipper Jack Wilshere to fire over the bar from close range after profiting from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free kick.

Wenger's men orchestrated the perfect response after the break, however, when Sead Kolasinac capitalised on some poor defending from Ronald Mukiibi to finish beyond Aly Keita and dampen any hopes of a memorable upset.
