Swieqi Yobetit Phoenix and La Salle lead way in men’s and women’s leagues

Swieqi YoBetit Phoenix are currently leading the scoreboard­s after winning two out of two games in local men first division handball.

Reigning champions La Salle HC are topping the women’s league after beating Birkirkara Handball and Aloysians. Kavallieri RS2, Aloysians and Swieqi Gasan Mamo Phoenix sit in second place, with three points each.

“It’s been two weeks since the league started, and anything is possible. Quality in both our local handball players has improved drasticall­y since the sport started out in Malta just 20 years ago, making the competitio­n ever more exciting,” says Malta Handball Associatio­n’s Marketing Director Orlando Bonnici.

La Salle’s ambidextro­us forward Krisztina Kalla leads the top scorer list with 18 goals in two games. Meanwhile, Krisztian Ocshleger of Swieqi YoBetIt Phoenix leads in the men’s division with 17 goals.

The league started in November 11 and all teams have played two games except for Luxol H.C. and La Salle Multilotto in the men’s division. The next game is on December 13 at the University Sports Complex in Tal-Qroqq, Msida.

Women’s division: Birkirkara Handball vs Kavallieri RS2 10-13; Aloysians vs La Salle 15-16; Swieqi Gasan Mamo Phoenix vs Aloysians 15-24; La Salle vs Birkirkara Handball 24-14; Kavallieri RS2 vs Swieqi GasanMamo Insurance Phoenix 22-32.
