Siemens committed to supporting Malaysia’s clean energy agenda
KUALA LUMPUR: Germany’s renewable energy player Siemens Energy is committed to becoming Malaysia’s energy partner in enabling hydrogen technology and grid infrastructure.
This is in sync with the recent visit to its headquarters in Germany by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has shown deep interest in hydrogen and grid systems.
Speaking to Bernama, Siemens Energy Malaysia managing director Azli Mohamed said at the current juncture, the company is working closely with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) in the space of hydrogen production and its application for co-firing in thermal power plants.
The company is also working hand in hand with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and its clean energy arm Gentari Sdn Bhd to explore opportunities within the hydrogen value chain.
“To put things into perspective, the grid is the backbone of decarbonisation, and we must ensure the grid’s preparedness for renewable adoption to guarantee Malaysians a reliable and secure energy supply.
“In line with this, we are actively collaborating with the TNB in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak Energy Bhd in Sarawak, and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd in Sabah, with the support from Malaysia’s Energy Commission, Sarawak’s Ministry of Utility and Communication and Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, as well as the Energy Commission of Sabah, for technical proficiency in designing, implementing, and managing resilient grid infrastructure,” he said.
Among the notable examples is Siemens Energy’s involvement with Petronas in the development of the Pengerang Cogeneration Plant, which forms part of the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex in Johor.
He added that by harnessing the expertise of grid professionals, Malaysia could bolster the resilience of its grid infrastructure against diverse challenges, including extreme weather conditions, cyber threats, and system failures.
“This collaborative effort underscores our collective commitment to ensuring a sustainable and dependable energy future for all Malaysians,” he said.
Azli added that aligned with national agendas such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and National Energy Policy 2022-2040, Siemens Energy is committed to supporting Malaysia’s energy transition by providing diverse power generation solutions that include a range of technologies from combined cycle to open cycle, tailored to meet the country’s evolving energy needs.
