Bright future for petroleum engineers
> Scholarships available for September intake
I Nan era, where robots can do almost everything that humans can, will future graduates be ready to undertake the challenges in the petroleum industry? asked Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Associate Head for the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) Dr Khalik Mohamad Sabil.
Khalik raised the question at the “Petroleum Revolution 4.0: Watt’s Next?” forum, organised by the university.
About 70 industry leaders, academics, alumni and students made up the crowd that discussed disruptive technologies and challenges in the petroleum industry and how it is creating opportunities to enhance how students are prepared for future engineering jobs.
Panelists from the oil and gas sector emphasised the viability of a career in petroleum engineering, especially with the rise in oil prices, the industrial revolution, not forgetting the disturbing mere 300 years worth of petroleum resources left on earth.
Petroleum will remain the biggest energy supplier over the next 30 years.
Although renewable energy production will increase, it will complement the petroleum industry.
Hence, universities need to develop graduates with soft-skills.
Those who are competent in communication and critical thinking, with the ability to adapt to change and continually increase their knowledge and upgrade their skills to meet industrial advancements.
Heriot-Watt is offering students who have attained at least 2As and 1B in their A-Levels or equivalent exams, full and half scholarships for its September 2018 intake.
