JOHOR BARU: The seat allocation among Barisan Nasional component parties is expected to be announced one or two days before nomination, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said discussion is still ongoing to find the best formula to distribute the seats.

“Whatever has been discussed should not be exposed and what has yet to be finalised should not be informed.

“We are not demanding seats through the media, which will only lead to squabbling,” he said at a press conference after the launch of Stage Bus System Transformation (SBST) known as Mybas by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad here yesterday.

Dr Wee, who is Transport Minister, said the focus on the Johor election should be on the people’s needs, which government could provide political stability and prosperity to the state.

“What the people want from the state election should be of utmost importance.

“Without political stability, the government cannot carry out projects that bring benefit to the people since it will be distracted with issues that have nothing to do with the people,” he said.

Asked if there is a change in sentiment among the Chinese community towards MCA and Barisan now compared to the last general election, Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, said what he feels is not important.

“What the people want is important. I am more pragmatic and do not want to make any predictions. Even though we feel a difference, we still have to be cautious,” he added.

Dr Wee also reminded MCA members that they must continue to work hard and do the best so that the people could judge which side is the most qualified.

On the standard operating procedure (SOP) announced by the Election Commission for the state polls, Dr Wee urged all political parties to abide by it.

“There are many improvements in the SOP for the Johor election compared to the Melaka election,” he added.

“We can still do our campaign and ceramah even though the SOP limits it to not more than 100 people, and carry out house-to-house visits.”
