Soon Huat’s back on his feet training again.

Goh brings some glad tidings for national squad

It’s not all gloom and doom for the national badminton squad despite the spate of injuries following last week’s Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships.

One shuttler at least is already back on his feet – Goh Soon Huat.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann has confirmed that the 30-year-old is fine and had resumed training with the mixed doubles squad since Tuesday.

The news comes as a relief as Soon Huat appeared to have badly injured his right back and was forced to retire midway through the opening match against Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See last Wednesday.

Soon Huat was attempting a jumping smash while he and Shevon Lai Jemie were trailing 4-5 in the second game.

The injury looked nasty as he could hardly stand and had to be wheeled out of court.

Choong Hann said Soon Huat has been over-asserting himself with a new offensive technique.

“Soon Huat is recovering fast and should be able to return to normal routine in a week or so,” said Choong Hann. “He was with us for training since Tuesday.

“He had been over-stressing himself with the a new attacking technique that he had just learned from training, and pulled his muscle that day. “Fortunately, it’s nothing too serious.” Soon Huat, however, will play no part in the forthcoming Thomas Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark from Oct 3-11.

The team’s preparations have been dealt a blow with men’s singles members Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao both being sidelined for several weeks after tearing their lower back and right hip muscle respectively.
