DAP national congress passes all proposed resolutions

SHAH ALAM: All resolutions proposed during the 2019 DAP national congress have been passed, with several amendments made to the party constitution.

In a move to avoid a repeat of the 2017 party crisis where it came close to being deregistered, all the same amendments made in 2014 were proposed again during the congress yesterday.

A new proposal on membership subscription was also passed.

In April 2013, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) sent a letter to the DAP stating that the party’s central executive committee (CEC) was not recognised due to an alleged dispute surrounding the party polls.

RoS also warned that DAP faced the risk of being deregistered as the 2013 party elections were not held in accordance with the law.

It told the party to hold fresh elections for the CEC.

In 2014, the party conference adopted a set of amendments to the party constitution and submitted it to the RoS.

However, RoS did not accept the amendments as well as other applications made by the party.

Therefore, according to a party spokesman, the same amendments were tabled again to avoid complications in the future.

Other highlights of the amendments made included enlarging the party’s disciplinary committee from five to a maximum of 20 members.

The congress also passed a historic amendment to reserve a 30% quota for female members in the CEC to encourage women participation in politics – which is combined with the amendment to increase the number of CEC membership from 20 to 30.

To strengthen state level and local capacity, election for state DAP Wanita and Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chiefs will be conducted every three years from the previous two years.
