Cases of insulting Islam under probe

Investigative papers opened on three social media users over offensive posts

KUALA LUMPUR: Three investigation papers have been opened in connection with cases of insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad, as well as his wife Siti Aisyah, said Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

The Inspector-General of Police said for the first case, involving a Facebook user who had posted words and infographic insulting the Prophet and his wife, a total of 478 police reports had been lodged.

“A 68-year-old man was arrested on Feb 19.

“However, due to his age and health complications, the suspect was released on police bail after three days in remand,” he said in a statement.

Mohamad Fuzi said the investiga- tion paper had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further instruction.

The second case involved another Facebook user, who insulted the Prophet and Muslims with profanities.

“We received 11 police reports. A 21-year-old suspect was arrested on Feb 21 to assist in investigations,” the IGP said.

Mohamad Fuzi said police were also probing a third Facebook user who had made viral a posting that insulted the Prophet and Islam.

“The original posting was made in 2013.

“In this case, we received 16 police reports but the owner of the Facebook account cannot be traced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission,” he said, adding that Bukit Aman was also in the process of identifying the Facebook user.

He urged the public not to make, spread or share any statement that could jeopardise public order and disrupt the unity of Malaysians.
