Akram more than happy to do his job in the middle of the park
PETALING JAYA: The job of a defensive midfielder can be a tough one.
Having to do the “dirty” job on the field and also being criticised as “useless” by fans can take a heavy toll on some footballers – but Malaysian midfielder Muhammad Akram Mahinan is unfazed.
Instead, the Kedah player said he would accept constructive criticisms and continue to give his best in the ongoing AFF Suzuki Cup campaign.
“Our coach (Tan Cheng Hoe) has given me a role as a defensive midfielder and I’m doing the best that I can,” said Akram.
“The job can be arduous as one has to protect the centrebacks from quick counter-attacks and also make sure the team are able to keep possession.
“I’m aware of the comments hurled at me but it’s not going to affect my focus. I accept some criticisms but ignore those that do not make sense,” said Akram, who promises to work harder for the team’s success.
Akram featured in Harimau Malaya’s first two matches as the team beat Cambodia 1-0 in Phnom Penh and Laos 3-1 in Kuala Lumpur. He was instrumental in the first game as he disrupted many of Cambodia’s attacks and looked tireless throughout the match.
His dogged approach may not tickle one’s fancy but he will be counted on by his teammates to disrupt Vietnam’s game, who are known for their speed and passing.
Akram said the match against Vietnam in Hanoi tomorrow would be a real acid test for Malaysia but the first two wins have given them some confidence.
“Preparations are going on fine and all the players are in good spirits. We urge Malaysians to pray and stand behind us during this campaign,” he added.
