Freed ‘Sultan of Melaka’ wants to rest

-

MELAKA: Noor Jan Tuah, the selfproclaimed “Sultan of Melaka”, plans to take a rest with his family now that he is freed.

“I would like to thank the Almighty and the judge for making a very clear decision.

“Let me spend some time with my family first before deciding on the next course of action,” said Noor Jan, who referred himself as “Raja Noor Jan Shah Raja Tuah Shah”.

But his troubles are not over yet, as the prosecution was set to file a notice of appeal against the Session Court’s decision.

Yesterday, Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi discharged and acquitted Noor Jan, 60, without him calling for his defence.

The businessman was charged with cheating four people through impersonation in 2013.

He allegedly duped Zaamat Md Idris, Mokhtar Md Yusof, Ahmad Zainudin Abdul Hamid and Hazizi Ikhwan Zaamat into believing that he was the “Sultan of Melaka” during a customary ceremony at the A’ Famosa Resort, near here, at 10pm on Dec 28, 2013.

In his decision, Meor Sulaiman said the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against the accused.

“The accused is discharged and acquitted of all the charges,” he said.

The charges were framed under Section 419 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years or fine, or both, upon conviction.

Noor Jan was represented by Datuk Shaharudin Ali and Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz.

Prosecuting officer Azhar Mokhtar said they would file an appeal today.
