SEREMBAN: Since Ramadan began last week, Lasanin Layai (pic) has been getting calls from his younger sister, reminding him to eat his pre-dawn meal before going to work.

However, there will not be any more such calls as his sister, Wamasaria, was killed in a road accident at the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia on Wednesday.

“We were extremely close because we were orphans and far away from our hometown in Sabah. It breaks my heart as I won’t be hearing her voice anymore,” said the 25-year-old when met at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital mortuary here yesterday.

Wamasaria, 22, a third year student doing industrial and chemical technology, was killed after she was run over by a campus bus at around 4.20pm.

She was riding pillion on a motorcycle when the vehicle skidded. Her friend, Nurul Fariza Natasha, fell on the left side of the road and sustained light injuries. But Wamasaria, who fell on the right, was run over by the bus and died on the spot.

Lasanin, who got the tragic news from an older sister, said he became closer to Wamasaria after they moved here from Sandakan.

“Besides the two of us, we have another sibling who is a student at Universiti Teknologi Mara in Selangor.

“We hope to take her remains back to our hometown for burial,” he said, adding that they had 11 siblings.

USIM deputy vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan said based on the post-mortem, Wamasaria died due to serious head and chest injuries.

“We will bear the burial costs and help the family send her remains back,” he said.
