JOHOR BARU: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar wants Malay leaders to hold discussions and seek ways to strengthen the community.

“As a Ruler who has promised and sworn to protect the interest of the Malays and Islam, I will not allow a power struggle among Malay leaders to continue happening as it would cause disunity and weakness in the community,” Sultan Ibrahim said in a statement in conjunction with his 59th birthday celebration.

His Majesty said he was grateful for Johor’s development and was proud of the tolerance shown by the people of various races and religions in creating a strong Bangsa Johor.

“However, on this historic day, I want to voice my apprehension about the struggles facing the Malays,” he added.

His Majesty said a crisis of credibility had tarnished the image of institutions led by the Malays.

“It can erode the confidence, influence and actual power of the Malays.”

The Sultan said such a worrying erosion had prompted him to remind the Malays to find an immediate solution.

The interests and influence of the Malays should be protected in the best way, the Sultan added.

His Majesty said Johor was where the most successful and structured Malay struggle began.

The state was now the strongest Malay “fortress” in the country, he added.

“The Malays must rise united to become big and influential, without having to offend or sideline other races.”

Sultan Ibrahim said Malays should not be preoccupied with their special rights if they were also idle and feuding with each other.

Leaders, the Ruler said, should find the best way to strengthen the position of the Malays.

“As such, I would like to advise all Malay leaders to seek a consensus ( bermuafakat), sit together and openly discuss the problems facing the community.”

The Sultan said the discussions should focus on enhancing their dignity and protecting the interests of the Malays.

His Majesty urged Malay leaders to show their sincerity in the fight to protect the Malays instead of merely protecting their own interests.

“Restore the trust and faith of the Malays for their leaders,” said Sultan Ibrahim.
