Navy duo stable after alleged abuse

IPOH: The two navy personnel, who have been hospitalis­ed since Sunday after suffering injuries at the Sungai Wangi detention room allegedly from abuse, are in stable condition.

Both in their 30s, they suffered similar injuries to two other navy men who died there on Friday.

They are being treated at the Royal Malaysian Navy Hospital in Manjung.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said two suspects, aged 29 and 37, have been remanded until Oct 6 in connection with the case.

“The suspects were handed to us by the Navy on Monday.

“The Navy has given its full cooperatio­n in the matter,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntaril­y causing grievous hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidati­on.

The Navy is also conducting its own investigat­ion into the incident.

Last Friday, Muhammad Lailatul- man Mohd Sukri, 26, and Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, both with the rank of Laskar Kelas 1 (Able Rate), died while held in the detention room. They had abdominal injuries.

A total of five suspects have been arrested in connection with the deaths.

Initially classified as sudden death, the case was reclassifi­ed as murder following post-mortem reports revealing signs of abuse and grievous injuries.
