Empowerment programme proves a success

-

The Educational Welfare & Research Foundation Malaysia (EWRF), a charitable organisation that works to uplift and empower the Malaysian Indian community, hosted their Civil Society Intervention (CSI) Charity Tournament at Glenmarie Golf Country Club in Shah Alam and it proved a big success.

More than 110 golfers attended the event and included leaders from the business world and other sectors of society.

The CSI programme aims to prevent crime and install positive attitudes among the youth through sport. It also helps raise their confidence and self-esteem.

“The students are exposed to character building, life skills, sports activities, psycho-social counselling, mentoring, career guidance and empowerment camps during a 20-week programme,” said EWRF president SP Nathan.

“The success factor of CSI is retention. The longer they are in the programme, the lesser the possibilities of recidivism. The facilitators become their ‘elder brothers or sisters’ and with a ratio of one facilitator to 10 students, they are able to develop a close rapport and slowly cultivate a better understanding of what to achieve.

“The CSI programme is consistent with the mission and interest of fellow Malaysians to make our country a safer place for everyone and hope that you will find it in your hearts to support this programme,” he added.

“Golfers and donors’ contributions have made it possible for us to continue our efforts in our core community driven programmes, which specifically aim to transform academically under-performing and socially challenged students so that they too can become ordinary and positive members of our community.”
