Royal couple tour Selangor’s rice bowl in first official visit
SABAK BERNAM: The Selangor Ruler, in his first official visit to Sekinchan since ascending the throne, tried his hand at harvesting padi yesterday.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah operated a harvester while his consort, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, took photos of him and the lush padi fields.
The royal couple arrived at the town dubbed the rice bowl of Selangor at 9am for breakfast at Hao Xiang Chi seafood restaurant.
Accompanying them were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, his wife Datin Seri Shamshida Taharin, state secretary Datuk Mohd Amin Ahmad Ahya, state leaders and local representatives.
Their next stop was Ah Ma House, a specialty cake and biscuit store that was converted from a wooden house in the middle of a padi field along Jalan Tali Air 5.
Riding in classic buggies, the royal couple and other guests then visited a padi processing factory owned by PLS Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd, where Sultan Sharafuddin harvested the ripened grains.
They were also given a tour at the gallery and briefed on how the homegrown rice was planted and harvested.
The visit continued at the manufacturing plant of Khind Holdings Bhd, an international electrical home appliances brand with a humble beginning at Sekinchan in 1961.
The royal couple’s half-day visit ended with a luncheon at Wisma Masri, an agro-bazaar offering a variety of locally produced delicacies and snacks.
Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim presented the royal couple with Sekinchan’s fresh fish and tiger prawns.
