ASP and six cops held in drug busts

RM6.7mil worth of drugs, cars, jewellery and RM800,000 in cash seized

-

ALOR SETAR: The seven policemen and a man who were arrested during multiple drug busts in two states were monitored by a special police team for a year.

Kedah CPO Commissioner Datuk Asri Yusoff said officers from Bukit Aman’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) and Narcotics Crime Investigation Department seized RM6.7mil worth of drugs, cars, jewellery and RM800,000 in cash from the rogue policemen and the male civilian on Monday and Tuesday.

One of the police officers holds the rank of ASP.

In a press conference here yesterday, he said STING arrested the suspects, aged between 27 and 43, in operations in Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.

He added that at 7.50pm on Monday, the team ambushed two vehicles in Felda Sungai Tiang, Pendang, Kedah, and detained three men.

The officers found 75kg of syabu worth RM5.25mil and 7.4kg of heroin- based substances worth RM740,000 in the cars.

The team then raided a laundry shop in Changlun 10 minutes later and detained a man.

But no drugs were recovered from him.

“At 8.55pm, the team checked one of the suspects’ house in Felda Sungai Tiang and found 70gm of cannabis in the living room,” he said.

The press conference was also attended by STING senior commander ACP Baharom Othman.

Hours later, at 12.30am on Tuesday, STING raided a house in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, and detained three men.

Another suspect was arrested there.

The team recovered 4,040 yaba pills ( pil kuda) worth RM80,800 from the four suspects, Comm Asri said.

It is understood that the three policemen arrested in Kedah were attached to the Bukit Kayu Hitam Border Security Agency, while the other four policemen including the ASP were working for Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department.

“All of them tested negative for drug abuse.

“We believe the drugs were smuggled in from a neighbouring country for distribution in Penang and Kuala Lumpur,” he said, adding that the suspects have been remanded until Tuesday.

Comm Asri said the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
