The Star Malaysia

Work together for bene t of students

- SANTHI PRAGASAM Ampang

I REFER to the letter “Classes should not be compulsory” (The Star, April 1) by Christine.

While I agree with the writer that every child needs rest it is, however, up to the parents to decide whether they want their child to attend extra classes.

Usually, these extra classes are meant to enhance the students’ knowledge in the subjects taught during school hours. Even if these classes are held to complete the lessons, what’s the problem? The teachers have these classes for a good reason, I am sure.

Being a teacher, I know very well that attending extra classes has enabled many students to perform very well in their public exams.

In fact, I was very amused that Christine thinks most parents agree to let their children attend the extra classes just to avoid making the teachers angry. I believe the teachers would be the happiest lot if parents did not send their children for these extra classes.

Parents must realise that teachers or the school are responsible for the students’ wellbeing when they are in the school premises.

Therefore, please understand that teachers are in fact taking on more responsibility with your children attending these extra classes. Given a choice, I am very sure the teachers would prefer to be at home with their families rather than in school.

Parents must make it a point to show their children that they understand and respect the teachers’ invaluable role in education.

Only then will their children respect their teachers, show interest in and value their studies.

Parents must not take teachers’ actions in schools for granted and make statements as they wish.

When the school authorities perform their duties to mould individuals into complete beings under the Education Ministry’s plan, parents have to cooperate through various means.

Let us work hand in hand through dialogue sessions with the parties concerned to achieve our vision for the benefit of our younger generation.
