Pathway to a successful career
AS the youngest in the family with parents who has never been to school – Huhanesan Muniappan was adamant to create a better life for him and his parents. After completing SPM at SMK Taman Indah, Tampin, he then pursued his STPM but failed to secure a place in public universities to pursue a course in Computer Science.
But an encounter with Nilai University and a visit to its campus in Bandar Baru Nilai, Negeri Sembilan made Huhanesan more determined to pursue his dream career. “A lecturer from the Department of Computing at Nilai University provided me with so much information on the different types of career and opportunities as well as testimonials from successful students. I knew this is the place I would want to pursue my studies,” said Huhanesan.
Huhanesan spent four years at Nilai University, starting with a Diploma in Computer Science, he scored a distinction at the end of the programme and progressed into the degree programme with a scholarship.
“The lecturers here are very attentive to the students, but at the same time, they give us space to discover and learn while still guiding us to ensure that we are on the right path,” said Huhanesan.
He explains that the Computing programmes at Nilai University placed a lot of emphasis on programming and ensures that the students master the basic core that is necessary for software engineering. He also highlighted that students who completed the computer science programmes from Nilai University will also have opportunities to gain additional certifications including the Novell Certified Linux Administrator (NCLA) and the Novell Certified Linux Professional (NCLP) certifications. Students are also able to gain the certified Associate JAVA Track and Associate Database Track from Oracle.
“Nilai University also provided opportunities for students to pursue various clubs and societies and this enhances our social skills in addition to academic grades,” shared Huhanesan.
He stayed in the University’s on-campus accommodation and goes swimming at Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club to exercise and relax whenever he can. He was also active in various clubs and got involved in many fund raising campaigns – notably one last year, with a local authority in raising awareness and funds for a wildlife elephant sanctuary.
Huhanesan is currently employed as a Systems Engineer at ON Semiconductor (a Fortune 500 company) in the town of Senawang. He works close to home so that he can look after his elderly parents.
“Nilai University has given me so much into making me the person I am today. The programme I have completed at the university, coupled with the close internship opportunities Nilai University provided students – have given me the skills I needed to stand out from the crowd.” ■ Nilai University’s programmes in computing prepares students for the real world.
