Sequel in the works?
With the success of Polis Evo, actor Shaheizy Sam says a second film is possible.
ACTOR Shaheizy Sam hopes the ongoing box office success of Polis Evo will inspire film industry players to think about investing more in talent and marketing.
“We need to think about spending better. Filmmakers have to start thinking about investing in talented production teams to improve the look and feel of a movie. Then they should also invest in marketing and promotion,” he said at an interview in Kuala Lumpur.
Shaheizy added: “The success of Polis Evo is really due to the hard work of the production team. The scriptwriters prepared a great storyline and the director was able to make everything come together perfectly. I think I’m just a small part of that equation.”
The action- comedy film produced by Astro Shaw was released on Sept 17 and has since collected more than RM8mil at the local box office.
“Looking at the way the film is doing right now – if I’m part of the production team – I’d start writing scripts for Polis Evo 2 to 5,” he said with a laugh.
In the Ghaz Abu Bakar- directed film, Shaheizy plays policeman Khai who is forced to team up with Sani ( Zizan Razak) to take down a notorious drug syndicate. The duo have to figure out how to overcome their differences and work together to solve the case.
Previously, it was reported that the film grossed RM2.5mil in box office collection after just four days of its initial release.
Shaheizy also opened up about his much- talked about appearance at the 27th Malaysia Film Festival event in KL on Sept 5 where he presented an award wearing a Polis Evo T- shirt. The jovial actor said it’s all part of a necessary sacrifice to get more people to be aware of the movie.
“I was supposed to wear an Armani suit. I knew people were saying that I disrespected the event’s dress code. People also said that I’ve embarrassed myself. They can say whatever they want. I did what I had to do to promote a good film.”
The 33- year- old actor believes that Polis Evo has set a new benchmark in the local film industry.
“The success of Polis Evo proved that audience wouldn’t mind paying money to watch quality local films in the cinema.”
One thing he does not want to see in the future is a trend to incorporate Polis Evo into every movie. “I really hope we don’t make movies like Gangster Evo, Hantu Evo or Suamiku Polis Evo,” he said in good humour.
Polis Evo is currently showing in cinemas nationwide.
