Choice of two campuses for MBBS

-

aS a global university of choice, MSU’s involvement in the area of medical education is an initiative towards complementing the nation’s need for qualified medical personnel in Malaysia and the region.

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery ( MBBS) programmes are offered through the International Medical School ( IMS) at the MSU main campus in Shah Alam and its offshore campus in Bangalore, India, which is Malaysia’s first medical school to receive a five- year accreditation from the Malaysian Medical Council ( MMC).

Since 2010, the Bangalore and Shah Alam campuses have produced six cohorts of qualified doctors who are currently serving in public hospitals throughout the country.

The MBBS at MSU is a five- year programme and is divided into three phases with each phase varying in terms of length, subjects and activities involved.

The MBBS curriculum is built according to MMC guidelines and approved by MMC. The MBBS programme presents continually expanding levels of medical experiences.

In the early years of study, the basic medical sciences are taught in the context of patient care. Later in the course, clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong scientific foundation.

An emphasis on clinical communication skills and early clinical contact visits to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals is a feature of MSU’s MBBS course.

Upon completion, a student has to register with the Public Service Department and complete a two- year housemanship programme at selected public hospitals under the supervision of the Health Ministry.

According to statistics by the Health Ministry, for 2013 there were 46,916 doctors, including specialists, with a doctor to population ratio of 1: 633 and by 2020 based on the estimated population of 34 million, 85,000 doctors would be needed to attain the standard ratio of 1: 400.

Intakes for the MBBS programme are in May and October and qualified students are required to sit for the Medical Entry Test ( MET) which will be held on May 6 at the MSU campus in Shah Alam to determine their aptitude for the MBBS programme.
