KUCHING: The passing of Dr Thomas Chung Kim San is deeply felt by Christians in Sarawak.

This is according to Bishop of Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, the Rt Revd Datuk Danald Jute, who said the late Dr Chung worked across many churches but would identify himself as an Anglican and had served at St. Faith’s Church Kuching faithfully.

“He will be greatly missed yet we rejoice that he is now resting and singing in Heaven. He was a good chorister,” added Danald who had known the late Dr Chung for about 40 years ago since he (Danald) was still a seminarian.

“He was a leading lay leader and member of St Faith’s Kuching and they would organise rallies, which I would attend with friends.

“We offer grateful thanks to God for the life, ministry and public service of Dr Tommy Chung,” he said.

The late Dr Chung was a choir member of St Thomas Cathedral in his younger days.

Ong also revealed that their families were neighbours when they stayed in senior government quarters. Dr Chung taught Mathematics when he (Ong) was in Form 1 at St Thomas’s Secondary School.

“He was very active in church work and in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ: being an excellent and well read preacher he was much sought after.

“In his leisure time he was known for his in-depth and expert knowledge on precious gems, jewelry and beads and other antiquities and had himself owned a rather enviable collection,” Ong wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, a consultant general pediatrician Dr. Ong Eng-Joe said the late Dr Chung was an enthusiastic and passionate preacher for Christ besides being a doctor.

He noted that Dr Chung was fondly known as Dr Tommy among the Kelabit people, having spoken in many of their church meetings.

It is learnt that Dr Chung passed away at 8pm last night (April 28).

A wake service will be held at Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) Hall, Jln Stampin, on May 2 at 7.30pm while the funeral service will be at St Faith Church on May 3 at 10am.
