MIRI: Teachers are encouraged to focus on holistic education to shape well-rounded students

Although academic excellence is important, selflessness and noble personality are indispensable for students to become useful citizens in the society.

This was said by Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting at the opening of a Gawai Raya programme organised by SK Jalan Bintang and the school’s parent-teacher association (PTA) recently.

Ting said it was important to prepare individuals who are able to adapt to changes and challenges.

“This means every student is equipped with leadership qualities, able to communicate well, is intelligent, creative with scientific thinking skills besides being patriotic and capable of leading the nation in the future,” he stated.

Ting also emphasised the importance of the English language and hoped students would adapt well to the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English.

“English is a global language and we want a new generation of Sarawakians who are proficient in the language,” he said before announcing a RM120,000 rural transformation project grant for the school.

Meanwhile, school headmaster Ahmad Othman said the Gawai Raya programme was a Student Integration Plan for Unity (Rancangan Integrasi Murid Untuk Perpaduan) aimed at instilling unity among the students.

“The essence of unity should be focused earlier when children are still without any prejudice amongst friends of different races and religion,” he said.

Various performances by students entertained all present while they enjoyed a potluck meal from parents.

Also present were PTA chairperson Adly Munzir Md Tahir, his vice chairperson Iqbal Abdollah and other guests.
