Unimas students spruce up SK Tanjong Bako
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Twohundred students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) got together for a village clean- up/ recycling programme as well as mural- painting at SK Tanjong Bako yesterday.
It is learnt that the students are from the university’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences), Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, and Faculty of Architecture.
They were joined by their ‘foster families’ and other villagers of Kampung Tanjong Bako, teachers of the primary school and staff members of Padawan Municipal Council ( MPP).
The activity was part of Unimas’ ‘ Nature Care’, meant to instil community- based learning methods in the university students, especially those undertaking the Unimas’ ‘Medical Doctor’ course.
“The programme is conducted according to the guidelines of highimpact educational practices. Through this programme, university students have the opportunity to enhance their skills such as in communications, problem- solving, decisionmaking, leadership, group work, critical- thinking and manners, and at the same time, collaborate with their peers, lecturers and various external agencies,” said Unimas in a statement.
Meanwhile, a run was also held in conjunction with the programme, where 540 local and international runners took part.
The 5km category of the ‘Nature Run 1.0’ included ‘ plogging’, where the participants collected rubbish along the route.
“The purpose of the run is to raise the levels of awareness and pro- environmental behaviour,” said Unimas, adding that the event also had the 10km and 21km categories.
Present to present the prizes to the top participants of Nature Run 1.0 was Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
Later, the assemblyman also presented RM14,200 to the committee of Masjid Darul Ibadah in Kampung Tanjong Bako.
The fund was part of the donation given by the Yang diPertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to mosques in Demak Laut constituency recently.
